Eye Teaming and Binocular Vision
Healthy vision depends on both eyes working together as a team. When they don't, your brain must work harder to keep vision clear and comfortable. Conditions we commonly evaluate:
Strabismus is a condition in which the eyes are misaligned—one or both eyes may turn inward, outward, upward, or downward. The misalignment can be constant or intermittent, and may affect one eye or alternate between both. It occurs when the eye muscles are unable to coordinate properly, disrupting the brain's ability to fuse the two images into a single image.
Signs & Symptoms:
- Visibly crossed or wandering eye
- Double vision
- Tilting or turning the head to see more clearly
- Squinting or closing one eye
- Poor depth perception
- Difficulty with reading or near tasks
- Eye fatigue or headaches after visual activities
Amblyopia is a condition in which one eye develops reduced vision that cannot be fully corrected with glasses or contact lenses alone. It typically develops in childhood when the brain begins to favor one eye over the other, suppressing the input from the weaker eye. It is often associated with strabismus or a significant difference in prescription between the two eyes.
Signs & Symptoms:
- Reduced vision in one eye
- Poor depth perception
- An eye that appears to wander or turn
- Squinting or closing one eye
- Difficulty with tasks requiring fine visual detail
- Clumsiness or trouble judging distances
Diplopia, or double vision, occurs when a person sees two images of a single object. It can be caused by a misalignment of the eyes (binocular diplopia) or by a problem within one eye itself (monocular diplopia). Binocular diplopia, the more common type, disappears when one eye is closed and is typically related to eye muscle imbalance or neurological issues.
Signs & Symptoms:
- Seeing two overlapping or side-by-side images
- Covering or closing one eye for relief
- Tilting or turning the head to reduce the effect
- Headaches and dizziness
- Difficulty reading or driving
- Nausea in more severe cases
Binocular vision is the ability of both eyes to work together as a coordinated team to produce a single, clear, three-dimensional image. Poor binocular vision, also called binocular vision dysfunction, occurs when the eyes are slightly misaligned or struggle to stay coordinated, forcing the brain to constantly compensate. This can cause significant strain even when each eye sees clearly on its own.
Signs & Symptoms:
- Headaches, especially around the eyes or forehead
- Eye strain and fatigue
- Blurred or fluctuating vision
- Difficulty with prolonged reading or screen use
- Light sensitivity
- Motion sickness and dizziness
- Difficulty concentrating
Depth perception is the visual ability to judge the relative distance of objects and to perceive the world in three dimensions. It relies on both eyes working together (stereopsis) to process slightly different images from each eye and calculate distance. When the eyes don't team properly, this three-dimensional processing breaks down.
Signs & Symptoms:
- Difficulty judging distances (e.g., when parking, catching a ball, or navigating stairs)
- Clumsiness or frequently bumping into objects
- Trouble with sports requiring spatial judgment
- Poor performance on tasks requiring fine motor precision
- Avoiding activities that demand accurate distance estimation
Vision After Neurological Injury
A concussion, traumatic brain injury, stroke, or other neurological condition can change the way your visual system functions. Even after other symptoms improve, vision problems may continue to affect everyday activities.
Vision Problems After Concussion
A concussion disrupts the brain's ability to process visual information. This can cause persistent blurred vision, difficulty focusing, light sensitivity, and problems with eye tracking, often continuing long after other concussion symptoms have resolved.
Brain Injury Vision Disorders
Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) frequently disrupt the visual pathways in the brain, leading to eye misalignment, double vision, visual field loss, and difficulty processing what the eyes see. These issues can significantly impact daily activities and quality of life.
Stroke-Related Vision Changes
A stroke can damage the visual cortex or the nerves that control eye movement, resulting in visual field loss, double vision, or difficulty with visual perception. Early evaluation is critical to identifying the extent of vision loss and guiding rehabilitation.
Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation
Neuro-optometric rehabilitation uses specialized lenses, prisms, and targeted vision therapy to retrain the visual system following a neurological event. This structured program helps restore visual comfort, coordination, and function for everyday tasks.
Visual Snow Syndrome
Visual Snow Syndrome causes a constant static or "snow"-like overlay across the entire visual field, similar to the noise seen on an untuned television. It is often accompanied by afterimages, trails behind moving objects, light sensitivity, and difficulty seeing in low-light environments.
Prism Lens Needs
Prism lenses bend light before it enters the eye to compensate for misalignment caused by neurological injury. They can reduce or eliminate double vision, ease spatial disorientation, relieve headaches, and help the visual system function more comfortably during recovery.
